Sjöbod

In de stille bossen rond een van Dalarna’s vele meren in Zweden staat dit karakteristieke rode schuurtje. Die warme, aardse roodtint – het beroemde “Falun Rood” – ontstaat uit koperpigment uit de mijnen van Falun en heeft generaties lang Zweedse boerderijen en schuurtjes beschermd tegen de barre noordelijke winters.

Een sjöbod is een traditioneel Zweeds boothuisje dat direct aan het water staat. Deze kleine houten gebouwtjes werden gebruikt om boten, netten en visuitrusting op te slaan, en vaak ook als werkplaats voor bootreparaties. Ze zijn een kenmerkend onderdeel van het Zweedse landschap langs meren en de kust.

Deze kleine aquarel, weer een vierkante, heb ik op mijn vakantie in Zweden gemaakt. Wat me fascineerde aan deze plek was de prachtige koelte die in het bladerdek hing, samen met dat mooie rood. Waar het zonlicht door het groen filterde, werden de groentinten rijker en koeler – van warm oranje-geel, naar geel-groen in het volle licht, naar die koele turquoises verderop.

In the quiet forests around one of Dalarna’s many lakes in Sweden stands this characteristic red barn. That warm, earthy red tone – the famous “Falun Red” – comes from copper pigment from the mines of Falun and has protected Swedish farms and barns against the harsh northern winters for generations.

A sjöbod is a traditional Swedish boathouse built directly by the water. These small wooden structures were used to store boats, nets, and fishing equipment, and often served as workshops for boat repairs. They are a characteristic feature of the Swedish landscape along lakes and coastlines.

This small watercolor, another square format, I painted during my vacation in Sweden. What fascinated me about this place was the beautiful coolness that hung in the canopy, together with that lovely red. Where sunlight filtered through the green, the green tones became richer and cooler – from warm orange-yellow, to yellow-green in full light, to those cool turquoises further back.
