Falaise dans l’Ombre

Falaise dans l’Ombre, “klif in de schaduw”, toont een stukje rotskust bij Les Grandes Dalles in Normandië. Op een kiezelstrand, met weinig materiaal bij de hand, ontstond dit kleine aquarelletje van 20 bij 26 centimeter. Prachtig weer, een heldere zon en een strak blauwe hemel, en deze plek bood nog net genoeg schaduw om er comfortabel te kunnen zitten en schilderen.

Het is geschilderd in tegenlicht, met de zee en de kiezels erachter badend in licht. Dat contrast geeft de stenen op het strand hun glinstering, kleine lichtflitsen tussen de donkere partijen. Door de rots donker en warm te houden en de omgeving licht te laten, krijgt het tafereel meteen diepte, ook al is het een bescheiden aquarelletje, gemaakt op locatie.

Sitting on a pebble beach with only a small kit at hand, this little watercolour of about 8 by 10¼ inches came together. Beautiful weather, with a bright sun and a clear blue sky, and this spot offered just enough shade to sit and paint comfortably.

It’s painted backlit, with the sea and pebbles beyond bathing in light. That contrast gives the stones on the beach their glinting, small flashes of light between the darker passages. Keeping the rock dark and warm while letting the surroundings stay bright gives the scene depth right away, even though it’s a modest watercolour, made on location.
