Bovenpad

“Bovenpad” – een landweg bij Oldebroek, vlakbij Zwolle – vastgelegd in dat betoverende moment wanneer de lage winterzon precies goed staat. Het is die typische winterse glans die me altijd trekt: helder gekleurde grasvelden, lange schaduwen, en dat prachtige spel van warm rood en paarsige tonen in het struikgewas tussen de bomen.

Dit schilderij gaat, zoals bij eigenlijk alle goede aquarellen, over het licht. Ik heb meerdere versies gemaakt van dit tafereel, steeds op zoek naar dat specifieke lichteffect. Deze versie, vrij geschilderd voor mijn doen, benadert het beste wat ik zag en voelde. Die lage zon die door de bomen breekt, de warme gloed op het pad, de koele schaduwen – het is allemaal daar.

Aquarelleren blijft me verbazen: je lost eigenlijk gewoon pigmenten op in water, brengt ze aan op papier met een penseel, en laat ze drogen, maar als het goed gaat vult je brein alles aan en denk je exact te zien wat daar ligt. Het is betoverend wanneer het lukt. De kleuren in dit schilderij vind ik werkelijk fantastisch – die combinatie van warme en koele tonen, de lichtheid van het gras tegen de diepte van het bos.

Ik neem altijd een klein cameraatje mee als ik ergens naartoe ga om snelle foto’s te maken ter plekke. Zo’n foto is gebruikt als referentie voor deze aquarel, maar het schilderen zelf is waar de magie gebeurt.

This painting is, as with virtually all good watercolors, about the light. I made several versions of this scene, always searching for that specific light effect. This version, painted quite freely for my approach, comes closest to what I saw and felt. That low sun breaking through the trees, the warm glow on the path, the cool shadows – it’s all there.

Watercolor painting continues to amaze me: you’re essentially just dissolving pigments in water, applying them to paper with a brush, and letting them dry, but when it works well your brain fills in everything and you think you see exactly what’s there. It’s enchanting when it succeeds. The colors in this painting I find truly fantastic – that combination of warm and cool tones, the lightness of the grass against the depth of the forest.

I always take a small camera with me when I go somewhere to take quick photos on location. Such a photo was used as a reference for this watercolor, but the painting itself is where the magic happens.
