Val-des-Prés

Aan het eind van de middag, in het gehucht Val-des-Prés in de Franse Alpen, zien we het licht laag over het landschap. Lange schaduwen liepen dwars over het asfalt. Het gebied is bergachtig, in de verte vervagen bergen in een koel grijs. Rechts zie je begroeiing nog volop in de zon.

Dit is een van de vele kleine aquarelletjes, 17 x 17 cm, die ik meestal niet op deze website zet. Ik maak er behoorlijk wat, vaak als studie, maar dit exemplaar vond ik zo charmant dat het een plekje hier verdiende. Ik denk dat ik er later meer plaats.

Voor dit werk gebruikte ik naast verf van Daniel Smith ook verf van het merk Schmincke. De Phthalo kleuren van Daniel Smith pigmenten zijn zo krachtig dat subtiel werken lastiger is, de Schmincke versies geven meer controle. Ik hield de kleuren helderder door minder te mengen en sneller te werken.

At the end of the afternoon, in the hamlet of Val-des-Prés in the French Alps, the light falls low across the landscape. Long shadows stretched across the asphalt. The area is mountainous, and in the distance the mountains fade into a cool grey. On the right, vegetation still stands in full sun.

This is one of many small watercolours, 17 x 17 cm, that I usually don’t feature on this website. I make quite a few of them, often as studies, but this one struck me as charming enough to earn a spot here. I think I’ll feature more of them later.

For this piece I used paint from Daniel Smith as well as from the Schmincke brand. Daniel Smith’s Phthalo colours are so powerful that working subtly becomes harder, the Schmincke versions offer more control. I kept the colours cleaner by mixing less and working faster.
